About The British Shorthair The British Shorthair looks like the feline equivalent of a teddy bear: sturdy, plush, and resilient. In addition to the better-known British Shorthair, British Longhairs are accepted by some associations. Instead of a short, plush coat, British Longhairs have a medium-length coat. They come in all range of colors, but the ubiquitous British Blue is the best known.

They are a slow-maturing breed, often not reaching their full size until between 3 and 5 years of age. Brits love being close to (though not necessarily on) their favorite people, but never in a needy or overly demanding way. They tolerate being picked up and carried, but their large frames need to be well-supported.
Did You Know? Like the Abyssinian, the British Shorthair faced near extinction after the end of World War II in England. Only the work of dedicated breeders saved this breed from disappearing altogether.
