Description

The Sokoke cat is breed originating from Kenya, Africa. The Giriama tribal name for the Sokoke is Kadzonzo, which means "looks like tree bark" in Swahili. This refers to its distinctive blotched tabby patterning found on Sokoke kittens.

Sokokes are long-legged, moderate sized cats with a medium build and a long, thin, whiplike tail. Their "old wood" coat pattern is their most distinctive feature. They are a gentle, affectionate breed.

Sokokes were first imported to Europe in the 1980s and were first accepted in FIFe in 1993. The first Sokoke kittens in the United States were born in 1999. The Cat Genome Project has recently uncovered the genetic makeup of the Sokoke Cat as belonging to the Asian Domestic Cat Group, with the Asian Wildcat identified as one of its ancestors. Further discovery demonstrated that the Sokoke cat, the streetcats of western Kenya, and the Cats of Lamu share similar genetic antecedents.

The Sokoke breed is a fully domestic cat with no characteristic wild cat markers, despite their exotic origins.

Acceptance: The Sokoke cat breed is accepted for championship status in FIFe. It is also accepted for registration by TICA, CCA, and UFO. TICA has accepted it for show in the Preliminary New Breed classification.
