Description

The Sokoke is breed originating from Kenya, Africa. The Giriama tribal name for the Sokoke is Kadzonzo, which means "looks like tree bark" in Swahili. This refers to its distinctive blotched tabby patterning.

Sokokes are long-legged, moderate sized cats with a medium build and a long, thin, whiplike tail. Their "old wood" coat pattern is their most distinctive feature. They are a gentle, affectionate breed.

Sokokes were first imported to Europe in the 1980s and were first accepted in FIFe in 1993. The first Sokoke kittens in the United States were born in 1999. Genetic analysis shows several genes unknown in other domestic cats or indigenous African wild cats, so their origin remains something of a mystery.

They are a fully domestic cat with no characteristic wildcat markers, despite their exotic origins.

Acceptance: This breed is accepted for championship status in FIFe. It is also accepted for registration by TICA, CCA, and UFO.
